The Do’s and Don’t for Styling a Cropped Jacket
10th Oct 2025
Perhaps you’ve heard, but a major trend this fall is cropped jackets. From bombers to trenches to denim…these jackets are all getting the cut.
There are many benefits to wearing a cropped jacket, one such benefit is that by having the jacket sit at the waist or hip your legs will look longer (especially if worn with high-waisted trouser, yes please!)
Cropped jackets are your closets’ unsung hero, as they can be easily styled for both casual and formal occasions, transitioning seamlessly from a day of running errands to a night out.
Let’s get into the do and don’t for styling one:
Do's:
Do Pair with High-Waisted Bottoms – This creates a balanced silhouette by defining the waist and showing off the slimmest part of your midsection. It also elongates the legs and creates a flattering overall look.
Do Experiment with Layering - Cropped jackets can be great layering pieces. Try layering them over a longer blouse, shirt, or dress to add dimension and visual interest to your outfit.
Do Accessorize Thoughtfully: Enhance your cropped jacket ensemble with carefully chosen accessories. Opt for accessories that complement the overall look while not overwhelming the cropped jacket itself.
Don'ts:
Don't Wear with Oversized Tops: Avoid pairing your cropped jacket with oversized tops or loose-fitting blouses. This combination can create an unflattering silhouette and make you appear boxy or disproportionate. Instead, opt for tops that are more fitted or that can be easily tucked into your high-waisted bottoms.
Don't Choose a Length That Hits at the Widest Part of Your Hips: When selecting a cropped jacket, avoid styles that end right at the widest part of your hips. This can draw attention to that area and potentially make you look wider. Aim for a length that hits at a more flattering point, such as just above or below the waistline.
Don't Forget Proportions: Consider your body proportions when choosing a cropped jacket. If you have a shorter torso, opt for shorter cropped jackets that create the illusion of a longer upper body. If you have a longer torso, choose jackets that end closer to your natural waistline to maintain balance. Finding the right proportion is key to a flattering and well-balanced look.
Finding the right jacket may take some time, but once you do it will all have been worth it!
